Why Auckland Car Owners Get Paint Correction Done

Swirl marks, fine scratches, and oxidation don't just look bad β€” they actively break down your clear coat. Left untreated, what starts as surface-level marring becomes permanent paint damage that costs far more to fix.

Auckland's UV intensity, salt air from the coast, and constant road grime accelerate paint degradation faster than most people expect. Machine polishing removes that contamination layer and restores the depth and gloss the paint had when the car left the factory.

If you're planning to sell, ceramic coat, or simply want a car that looks like it's been looked after, paint correction is the step that makes everything else work. Waxing over swirl marks just fills them temporarily. Correction removes them for good.

The Paint Correction Process

1

Wash and Decontaminate

The car is hand washed using a two-bucket method to avoid introducing new scratches before polishing begins. Iron decontamination spray is applied to dissolve bonded brake dust and road fallout, followed by a clay bar treatment to pull out embedded contamination the wash can't remove. The paint has to be completely clean before a machine touches it.

Paint Inspection and Assessment

Paint depth readings are taken across all panels using a digital gauge to confirm safe polishing tolerances. The paint is then assessed under high-intensity LED lighting to identify the type, depth, and distribution of defects. This determines which tier of correction is needed and sets realistic expectations before any polishing starts.

20-30 mins

Machine Polishing

A dual-action or rotary polisher is used panel by panel, working the correct compound or polish for each stage of correction. Pressure, speed, and product selection are adjusted based on paint hardness and defect depth. Each panel is wiped back and checked under lighting before moving on.

2-6 hours depending on tier and vehicle size

Refinement and Final Polish

After the cutting stage, a finer refinement polish is applied to maximise gloss and remove any micro-marring left by the compound. This step is what separates a flat, hazy result from paint that looks deep and reflective. Skipping it is the most common mistake made by operators using one-step products.

1-2 hours
5

Final Inspection and Panel Wipe

All polishing oils are removed with an IPA panel wipe so the true correction result is visible without filler products masking the finish. The car is inspected panel by panel under LED lighting and natural light. Any missed areas are addressed before the job is signed off. The paint is now ready for wax, sealant, or ceramic coating.

Paint Correction FAQ

The cost depends on the size of your vehicle, the condition of the paint, and which tier of correction is needed. A single stage on a small car will cost less than a multi-stage correction on a large SUV with heavy swirl damage. Royal Detailing provides a free quote after assessing your vehicle so you know exactly what you're paying before any work starts.
Most paint corrections take between four and eight hours depending on the tier and the size of the vehicle. Multi-stage corrections on larger or heavily neglected vehicles can take a full day. Matthew will give you a time estimate when you get your free quote so you can plan accordingly.
The correction itself is permanent β€” once a swirl mark is polished out, it's gone. What causes paint to degrade again is how the car is washed and maintained after the correction. Hand washing, proper wash technique, and avoiding automatic car washes will keep the paint looking sharp for years. Applying a ceramic coating over the corrected paint significantly extends the life of the finish.
Avoid automatic car washes entirely β€” they're the main cause of swirl marks coming back. Hand wash using a quality microfibre mitt and two-bucket method, or use a touchless wash if you're short on time. Applying a spray wax or detailer every few months helps maintain the gloss between washes. If you've had a ceramic coating applied after correction, follow the coating's specific care instructions.
Royal Detailing stands behind the work done. If you're not happy with the result on pickup, Matthew will address it before you drive away. It's worth noting that paint correction removes existing defects β€” it doesn't prevent new ones from forming, which is why many clients follow up with a ceramic coating for ongoing protection.
A standard cut and polish from a service station or drive-through detail uses a one-size-fits-all compound, often with a machine that can cause more damage than it fixes, and fills remaining swirls with wax or glaze to temporarily hide the problem. Paint correction is a multi-step process using the right compounds, pads, and polishers for your specific paint type, with each panel checked and refined until the defect is actually removed. The results last significantly longer and look noticeably better.
Swirl marks, light scratches, and surface oxidation can typically be fully removed. Deep scratches that have cut through the clear coat or into the base coat cannot be polished out and would require a respray to fix. During the inspection, Matthew will identify which marks can be corrected and which can only be improved, so you have a clear picture before work begins.
No. Many clients drop their car at an agreed location and collect it once the work is complete. Royal Detailing will keep you updated throughout the day and let you know when the car is ready for pickup. If you have specific access requirements or prefer to be present, that works too.
